From the Newsletter history archives... Vintage Equipment From  the November '86 Newsletter (entitled "Lenoir Amateur Radio Club" - after it was adopted as the official newsletter of the LARC but before it was renamed as the "News and Views"), it was  noted  that Jim Rogers, N4EUX, was the club's first elected President.  But since it was a November meeting, and election night, James Bradshaw was elected as the new President beginning his duties on Jan 1, 1987.  The other slate of officers to assist James in performing 1987 club funtions were Mike Cowick, N4FAX (Vice-President); Jewel Cowick, N4NJD (Secretary-Tresurer; and Jim Rogers, N4EUX (Newsletter Editor). In the same issue, Jerry, N4BDI, was offerring a Heathkit SB-200 1200-watt linear amplifier for sale at $350.00...not much change in price as to what they are fetching today...19 years later!!  Also offerred in the same issue was a computer-RTTY system based around the Commodore VIC-20...now a boat anchor.
(Each month, a brief spotlight will appear here on equipment you may have seen at hamfest swap tables.  This month it is the Drake R4-A Receiver ).
Designed to complement the Drake T4-X Transmitter (the pair becoming known as the "Drake C-line"), the Drake system probably did more to steal the thunder away from such heavyweights as the Collins line, the Hallicrafters line, and the Hammarlund line than any other combination of equipment.  The reasons are varied:  the price; the no-nonsense esthetic eye-appeal; the passband tuning; the highly stable rock-solid VFO; and the relatively small package.  Many hams used the R4-A in conjunction with transmitters of Drake's competitors and even in this application, the receiver was still a winner!  Note:  Drake also had the Drake TR-4C Transceiver, exhibiting many of the features of the separate R4-A/T4-X combo, in its lineup...but that is another story!  Due to their immense popularity at time of manufacture, many R4-A's still exist and many can be found at hamfest tables...for a price!

Spotlight on Clayton Crump, KE4VJH

Spotlight on Pat Crump, KE4LWD
Clayton hails from Chicago, Illinois by birthright, having been born February 23, 1958 in that city.  He attended Anderson Elementary in Chicago beginning in 1963 but since his parents hailed from Lenoir, a subsequent move found him attending Hudson High School in 1972.  The year 1975 found him employed with Hammary Furniture as an Inspector in the Cabinet room.  In 1978 he took on new responsibilities with Ryder Transportation Services and presently serves as a Customer Service Coordinator and Shop Foreman.  Married in 1986 to Ms. Kay Boston (1986), he & Kay reside in Lenoir. Clayton ultimately became interested in Ham Radio through his and brother Pat Crump's (KE4LWD) earlier involvement in CB Radio, later becoming licensed with a Tech ham ticket in 1995.  Clayton is no stranger to public service interests...as he currently volunteers his time to the Hudson Fire Department along with brother Pat. He presently serves the Caldwell County ARES as a member, paricipating in ARES's various activities, including the annual Bike Ride.
Unlike his brother Clayton, Pat is a native-born Carolinian, born in Lenoir in November of 1962. He attended local schools (West Lenoir, Hudson Elementary, South Caldwell H.S.) and, finally, Caldwell Community College, where he took classes in Auto Mechanics / Auto Body Repair.  He still attends CCC&TI in his Hudson Volunteer Fire Department on-going certfications.  Pat's first pre-teen job was a part-time job working for Fairway Shopping Center but 1985 found him working fulltime at Kincaid Furniture as an Assistant Manager in the Rub & Pack Department. In 1999, Pat became associated with Thomasville Furniture as a Nursing Office Administrative Specialist which ultimately led to his present employment with an Industrial Medicine Physician in February 2004.  Married in 1993, he has no children.  He first learned of Ham Radio  thru CB Radio, and became ticketed in 1994 as a Technician Class.  Pat is very active in Public Service activities including ARES and he actively participates in the Chamber of Commerce Annual Bike Ride.  Sideline interests include antenna projects. Pg 3 Each month, 2 of our regular LARC members (alphabetical order) are profiled in this section.  Several members, and club-officer profiles, are in past issues.
