Bye-Bye Morse Code Testing!
(Member-owned-items  Only) NVIS Antenna Experiment
Home    Previous    Next An NVIS(Near Vertical Incident Skywave) experiment will be conducted sometime in late-January to mid-February 2007 to test the effectiveness of this antenna method during local and/or regional emergencies in mountainous areas.  In effect, the test will consist of a mobile unit locating itself in a deep valley, gorge, or ravine and using HF radio on 75-meters to take a roll-call of participating NVIS Group members over a 200-mile radius.  Results will then be tabulated and studied for future use.  To learn more about NVIS, and to see if you would be interested in participating, go to http://main.nc.us/maraclub , click on "NVIS Antennas" on left of screen, read WA9OTP's article...then scroll down to article by KV5R for an excellent treatment of the subject.  Should you decide you would like to participate, email n4eux@arrl.net to be added to the roll-call list (you will be notified by email of the exact frequency that will be used and the date and time of the experiment). Circle Friday, February 23, on your calendar. That's when the current 5 WPM Morse code requirement will officially disappear from the Amateur Radio Service Part 97 rules. On or after that date, applicants for a General or Amateur Extra class Amateur Radio license no longer will have to demonstrate proficiency in Morse code. They'll just have to pass the applicable written examination. Federal Register publication January 24 of the FCC's Report and Order (R&O) in the "Morse code proceeding," WT Docket 05-235, starts a 30-day countdown for the new rules to become effective.  Deletion of the Morse requirement - still a matter of controversy within the amateur community - is a landmark in Amateur Radio history.
