GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

Pg 2 New this month:  Expanded ARRL & ARES news coverage (pages 6 & 7)
The LARC Newsletter has been published each month (except during the club's "hibernation" period) since October 1986!   Zowie!! During the February meeting, Gary Suddreth, KD4YTU, was appointed as the Chairman of the newly formed Mobile Trailer Committee.  Similiarly, Jim Rogers, N4EUX, was selected as the Chairman of the ARES/EOC-Kiosk Committee.
The Mobile Trailer Committee will work towards refurbishing and equipping our recently acquired Disaster Unit Mobile Trailer while the ARES/EOC-Kiosk Committee will assist and advise the EOC in setting up the soon-to-be- constructed  amateur radio kiosk in the EOC.  Both endeavors will enhance interoperability between the two entities during emergencies!
SILENT KEY -  We take note of the passing of D.H. Harris, WA4NDF, a Gamewell resident, on March 2, 2006. Things have settled down somewhatly at our QTH...now that the heat-pump has been installed.  Furniture has been moved back to its regular position and the basement is undergoing a radical change through the use of the truck to make many trips to the Salvation Army and the county landfill!  And the den is undergoing a facelift with new curtains, a new computer armoire, and space where I can actually see the floor!!  All this has not been without a price...I'm about frazzled!!  But on the upside, we won't have to suffer the "spring cleaning" syndrome this year.  Yee Haw!  (The XYL just said "Don't count on it!"). Oh well, the trees are budding out nicely...can Spring be far behind?? Back Next
