Vintage Equipment
From the September '87 Newsletter (entitled "Ham Radio News & Views"), it was noted that we, as a club, were preparing to conduct our very first money-raising project to increase the size of our club treasury to facilitate carrying out future projects that required a cash outlay. This money-raising project took the form of a Raffle to the general public with the 1st Prize being a $100. purchasing certificate to a local grocery store. Lesser amounts of $50.00 and $25.00 became the 2nd & 3rd prize respectively. All printed tickets were sold and the raffle went smoothly...with the net result of increasing our treasury by several hundred dollars. (Raising money or gaining new equipment for worthy organizations has been replaced, more or less, by charitable and/or tax-exempt organizations submitting requests for governmental grants...a process of which the club is actively seeking by incorporating and seeking a tax-free status. -Ed)
(Each month, a brief spotlight will appear here on equipment you may have seen at hamfest swap tables. This month the spotlight is on the
Clegg 99'er Transceiver
).
For you newer type hams, ever wonder what we used back in the early sixties for VHF work? Well, here 'tis. The Clegg 99'er was a 6-meter AM vfo-controlled (receive)/crysal controlled (transmit) VHF tranceiver. It punched out 5 watts (output) in the 50-52 Mhz range. To transmit, one had to flip the "lever" just below and to the left of the tuning knob into the "up" position or "down" to the receive position. No PTT here!! It might be pointed out here that the Clegg equipment of this era was considered to be in the top quarter of rigs in terms of quality (physical & electrical), audio (in & out), and price! I have seen units selling for as much as $175.00 in immaculate condition on hamfest tables recently. If you want a low power, 6-meter AM type rig for local operations...then this is the rig for you! They also make for nice conversation pieces if you are into collecting vintage rigs. (Next month: The Clegg 22'er 2-meter model. -Ed)

Now, try your hand at this month's offering:
(Email me if you know! -Ed)
No slouch in the styling department, this low-cost sports-type entry into the automotive field gained almost immediate acceptance in European motoring circles. Once imported, their popular acceptance on our shores ensured their success here as well. If memory serves me, this particular model weighed in at just under $2500. (delivered) in the Greenville, SC area where I was living at the time. Today, they are being avidly collected, restored, driven and displayed at car shows.

Auto Trivia
- [Last Month]
This month's selection was a "toughie" to guess. its roots go back to England but was renamed (the car & company) when it came to be imported onto our shores.. Its very last name may surprise you though! It's a
1930 American Austin 2-Door
which later became the American Bantam...and even later...the American Bantam Jeep, forerunner of the famous Bantam/Willys/Ford military "Jeep"!
