The Caldwell Amateur Radio Emergency Services (CARES) Net is called every Sunday night at 8:30 PM on the 147.33 (Hibriten) repeater. This is a formal directed net and is sponsored by the ARES. Its purpose is to train, and keep in readiness, a pool of qualified emergency radio operators in the event of a local and/or regional emergency.  Net checkins will be called by alpha groups and, unless you check in & out, you will be called again during the informal portion to offer any comments, etc.  The 147.33 repeater has a CTCSS tone of 141.3 mhz.     ??   Did you know...  ?? The Fourth Latern Council, in 1215, forbade clerks in holy orders to include surgery in their practice of medicine so they would not spill blood. Surgery was left to men who were neither scholars nor gentlemen.  A distinction grew between physicians, who were members of a learned profession, and surgeons, who practiced a menial trade, often doubling as barbers or dentists.

One of the best ways to sharpen your emergency communications skills is to check into the weekly CARES Net (see column at right).

Well it's Spring again -- birds returning, flowers blooming, and severe thunderstorms on the horizion.  Yes, Spring is severe thunderstorm season for our area and the NWS is concerned that there are not enough trained weather spotters in Burke, Caldwell, and Catawba counties.
Even with the advanced radar and satellite methods in use, the NWS cannot determine what is happening on the ground without spotters relaying accurate information.
The NWS is wanting to have some Spotter classes soon for new people and those whose training is 3 years old.  Contact me, KD4YTU, for more info.  -Gary Suddreth
It is rare when most of the personnel of Emergency Management are all present in one place and time and even rarer to get a photo of the event! Left to right (standing): Robert Reid, Paula Soots, Keith
