GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life. Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range. In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

FIELD DAY 2006 is June 24th & 25th. Get your gear checked out early!
The Catawba Valley Hamfest is right around the corner and we still need
confirmed help. We are one of the sponsoring clubs for the hamfest and it
would be great if we could get more involved. I will be helping with the
tailgate parking and I could use some help there. We need people who can
come early and stay late for unstacking tables, cleanup, and re-stacking tables.
Work will be going on all week, especially Friday, at the Fairgrounds so if
you can help any day...check with me. There will be a cookout Friday night
that is free for those who help. However, if you can't help but would like
to come to the cookout, just bring a covered dish or dessert to help feed
the "masses". This is a good time to socialize with other hams from the
other clubs. 73's de ka4hkk, Tom
The LARC Newsletter has been published each month (except during the club's "hibernation" period) since October 1986! Zowie!!
The March Meeting was a pivotal one inasmuch as the Constitution & ByLaws Committee presented its proposed revision of the Aug 1998 Constitution & ByLaws to the general membership for its consideration. During the hearing, the committee chairman, Jim Rogers, N4EUX, opened up the proceedings for additional additions, deletions, etc.,from the floor. Many new ideas were gathered and some will be incorporated into a re-worked and final presentation to be voted upon for possible ratification during the April meeting.
Yesterday was a milestone for me for two reasons. The first was that I had never been to Charlotte to see the "Discovery Place" (an eyeopener). But most important, I was able to attend the "Dead Sea Scrolls" Exhibition (truly awesome!). Combine these two events, and I enjoyed an experience that I would have certainly been sorry to learn that I missed out on had I known or found out later what all could be seen at this amazing place. Secondary, I was able to visit the Ham Radio station which is permanently on exhibit (yes, like W1AW, visiting hams can actually operate the station and to view the many vintage radios on display). You owe it to yourself & your family to visit "The Discovery Place" if you haven't already. A bit pricey, but you won't be disappointed!!
