From the Newsletter history archives... Vintage Equipment From  the April '87 Newsletter (entitled "Ham Radio News & Views"), it was noted that with the advent of the recent new Novice/Technician priviledges, it was surmised that more activity on 220 would surface in the near future [didn't happen.  -Ed] although it would take longer for them to occupy that band due to having to purchase new equipment, etc.  It was reported that several locals were using the new ten-meter phone allocations and were enjoying their new freedom from the CW key and/or the 2-meter restrictions for phone operations (technicians).  It was suggested to the guys/gals to thank the older hams (in high places) responsible for spearheading the changes through for them and that they  could, perhaps, return the favor to others someday.  Elsewhere in the same issue, it was noted that the Editor purchased a new PAKRATT-64 interface and had ordered a Commodore C-64, noting that a dealer could have "cleaned up" selling C-64's at the just-held Charlotte Hamfest...as everyone wanted one! [ The Commodore C-64's are now 30+ years old and qualifiy as "antiques" in the computer world!  -Ed]

(Each month, a brief spotlight will appear here on equipment you may have seen at hamfest swap tables.  This month the spotlight is on the Hallicrafters S-76 Receiver ).   Looking for all the world like a Hallicrafters S-40B (see April 2006 issue of the newsletter) , the S-76 had a number of changes, mostly internal.  Externally, you can readily see  that the speaker grill of the S-40B has been replaced by a giant S-meter (5-6"...one of the largest I have ever seen!) on the S-76.  One other control knob (Sensitivity ??) exists on the S-76 as opposed to the S-40B. Otherwise, you will be hard pressed to locate any other outside differences.  I believe that the same cabinet was actually utilized by both models...even the color (flat black)!  The major differences, when comparing the S-76 to the S-40B, shows up in the redesigned circuitry...with much improved sensitivity and selectivity.  At hamfests, the S-76 makes regular appearances and are priced in the $75.00 to $100.00 price range.  But beware!  Many well-meaning hams have gone inside and made circuit changes, etc., and some have been seen repainted.  Both of these things are a no-no to the true Hallicrafters collector.  Just keep looking until a nice model is found! Pg 3 Hallicrafters S-76 Home    Previous    Next Now, try your hand at this month's offering .   These window vans were actually introduced a bit earlier than the one depicted.  The resemblance to Volkswagen vans of the same year was no coincidence...as it was introduced as a head-to-head competitor.  This van, along with its sedan counterparts, later met its demise at the hands of a well-known self-appointed consumer-advocate. Can you name the Year, Make, & Model of this one??

??? ??? Auto Trivia -  [Last Month] This car came out near the end of the manufacturer's existence. The car's price kept it from being mainstream at the time...but is still eagerly sought after today! It was the 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk!    Dyke Holder, KC4HIX, accurately named the Year, Make,  and Model (in two attempts).
