GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

There were no new visitors or new members inducted into our membership during the April meeting.  Now is the time to start thinking about some recruiting efforts to bring new licensees (and past members to rejoin) into our fellowship! A simple phone call to a friend or ex-member may surprise you! Please note! Speaking of Addresses... The LARC now has a brand-new web domain identity - thanks to Gary, KD4YTU!  He has secured for us the domain address of Lenoir-ARC.org (and .net) .  Gary will set up a number of email addresses using this domain and later will host our very own website on his server free of charge!  Add ti onally, this newsletter will be available on the website for viewing and/or printing simply by clicking on one of the several "tabs".  Work will begin shortly on the design and implementation of the new website!! Pg 2 REMINDER:  MAY 10TH IS CLUB MEETING NIGHT!  BRING A FRIEND The LARC Newsletter has been published each month (except during the club's "hibernation" period) since October 1986 (20 years minus 4) ! Repeater Committee : The Repeater status was discussed & several suggestions were offered ranging from trying a different frequency pair to switching to a 440 repeater for our operations.  

Disaster Trailer Committee :  Project is still on temporary hold until after completion of other major projects and committments during the busy months of May-July.  It was suggested that the disaster trailer be made into a generator & antenna carrier and other supportive equipment.

EOC Kiosk Committee : An "antenna erection" work party for Saturday, May 5th, is scheduled to install our 2-meter/440 & 220 antennas atop EOC building.  Volunteers, please arrive at 9 AM!
I goofed!  During the April meeting, when we were discussing the date for the scheduled CPR Class to be conducted on April 26th at the EOC, I somehow wrote down in my notes that it was going to be June 26th ! Needless to say, Ruby & I missed the class. However, in talking with Twig (through Robert), it appears we may have a second chance...if we can garner up enough people to schedule another class in June.  So stay tuned if you would like to make up this class, as I do.
Also, Robert, WR4UNC, stated at the April meeting that the Disaster Mobile Trailer & Ford F350 Diesel Pickup Towing vehicle , formerly parked at the Sheriff's Dept., now belongs to the Dept. of Emergency Management and the EOC and, as such, we need to start assisting in refurbishing it and preparing it for disaster use!  This includes amateur radio equipment preparation.
