GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

We were pleased to welcome 3 visitors to the club at the April 19th meeting.  Moving in to the Lenoir area were Catherine "Cat" McDaniel, WB4CAT, hubby Francis "Buck" McDaniel, N4PGW, and their infant daughter.  We welcome you to the Lenoir area folks!! The LARC now has a brand-new web domain identity - thanks to Gary, KD4YTU!  He has secured for us the domain address of Lenoir-ARC.org (and .net) .  Gary will set up a number of email addresses using this domain and later will host our very own website on his server free of charge!  Add ti onally, this newsletter will be available on the website for viewing and/or printing simply by clicking on one of the several "tabs".  Work will begin shortly on the design and implementation of the new website!! Repeater Committee : No report at this time...as it appears the lack of a coax connector tool is grinding everything to a halt in getting the repeater back on the air.  -Ed

EOC Kiosk Committee :  Note: The kiosk is temporarily unavailable to members due to the fact that controlled drugs are now being stored in the rear portions of the top floor of Emergency Management and requires accompaniment of an EMT to gain access.  The kiosk, at this writing, remains in limbo.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Catawba Valley Hamfest.  I believe it was well attended, although it could have been even better had it not been for the scattered thundershowers that seem to come about every 30 minutes.  I have noticed that attendance has been down in the hamfests I have attended this year thus far.  I believe that smaller hamfests will continue to diminish (disappear?) and only 2-3 of the largest hamfests will survive the "shake out" in the near future.  Hamfests such as Charlotte, Shelby, Raleigh, etc., will be the survivors that  will thrive.
It looks like we dodged the bullet on another big weather cell last week- end...spawning tornadoes all the way from Kansas & Texas to the Carolinas!!
