From the Newsletter history archives... Vintage Equipment From  the January '87 Newsletter (entitled "Ham Radio News & Views", it was noted that a winner was declared in the contest to rename the "Lenoir Amateur Radio Club Newsletter to "Ham Radio News & Views".  The winner was Dean Norman, WA4SLI, who came up with the new name which will appear on this and subsequent issues.  Dean walked away with $5.00 as the prize for his entry. [The new name for the newsletter has been in use ever since January 1987 - over 19 years - but is sometimes shortened to just "News & Views", as it is today.  -Ed]  In other areas of interest, it was noted that James Bradshaw, N4NIN, assumed his new "President" duties while Mike Cowick, N4FAX, took over the Vice-Presidency.  Overworked Jewel Cowick, N4NJD, took over the reins of the office of Secretary-Treas urer.

(Each month, a brief spotlight will appear here on equipment you may have seen at hamfest swap tables.  This month it is the MFJ Portable Station )  While this month's selection is not really "vintage" (in fact, it is still in current manufacture!), the MFJ portable station combo has been around for a few  years but is starting to appear on hamfest tables with more frequency (pun intended).   The key word here is "station", since it is comprised of 3 different components; a transceiver, a tuner, and a rechargeable power pack.  Depending on the single-band transceiver model you choose, you can have a complete station ready-to-go on 20, 40, or 80/75 meters.  Both SSB or CW can be operated...there again, depending of the model purchased.  If running SSB, 12 watts is the rated output, while 5 watts is available in the CW model.  The rechargeable power-pack uses D-size batteries and the unit can be operated using A C mains or the internal batteries. (This is an amazing little QRP rig!  It is lightweight and the receiver is very stable and sensitive!  I used mine briefly on 40-meter CW and worked 7 states in a short time using a simple dipole antenna.  -Ed)

Pg 3 Each month, one of our regular LARC members (alphabetical order) is profiled in this section. Several members, and club-officer profiles, have appeared in past issues.

Graduating with a Phd. in Underwater Basket Weaving, Sam has an IQ of 187 and can speed-read 20,000 words in 4 days, 3 hours, and 15 minutes.  In 2002, Sam moved to Roadhis, NC and discovered Ham Radio and soon achieved his Amateur Extra + ticket.  His rejuvenated and modified NightKit receiver and  Heethkit transmitter can be heard belting out a powerful SSB signal on 1.2 Ghz.  His next goal is to get a handie-talkie so he can explore the lower freakwencies on 146 Mhz.
