From the Newsletter history archives... Vintage Equipment From  the September '86 newsletter (entitled "Lenoir Amateur Radio Club" - after it was adopted as the official newsletter of the LARC but before it was renamed as the "News and Views"), it was  noted  that a guest - Gregg Sellers, WB4HRR - was in charge of the club meeting program whereas he spoke on items such as Hamwatch, SKYWARN, and the CAP.  His program was well received judging from the number of handouts that were grabbed up and by  the number of club members wanting to know more!  (Gregg is still currently  the contact person and training coordinator for schedulng S KYWARN  training for clubs, etc., for our part of the state.  -Ed)
(Each month, a brief spotlight will appear here on equipment you may have seen at hamfest swap tables.  This month it is the Drake 2A Receiver ).
Perhaps the most exciting receiver to come off the drawing boards and into the hands of the mainstream ham fraternity in the early 60's was the Drake 2A receiver.  Eclipsed only by the Collins Line of equipment, it soon became known as the "Poor Boy's Collins".  The 2A sported, most importantly, passband tuning - a feature that endeared it to many hams whether in SSB or CW modes.  It's popularity has ensured a ready (but dwindling!) supply of these receivers on the  used aftermarket at hamfests.  They can fetch as high as $150. in "very good" condition!
