GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life. Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range. In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

Wow!! What a busy month we had for June! But that is the way we like it...isn't it? We started off with the Blowing Rock EmergencyFest '06 on the 17th. The LARC was invited to participate...and participate we did by setting up a complete HF & VHF live station operating under the KF4WOD club call. An adjacent CERT booth was also operated by LARC. Many visitors stopped by to chat and learn more about our operations! Next, the club participated in Field Day 2006 a week later, operating in the "4A, NC" category. We had a blast!! For good measure, we threw in a club meeting and a formal Basic Skywarn Training Session during the month. WHEW!!
