On the OnStar subject...there is more than meets the eye! On a recent TV news broadcast, it was reported that not only was OnStar able to lock, unlock, start, summon aid, and otherwise do other wondrous things to you and your car...it was able to
monitor the conversations
of the occupants inside the car (without their knowledge!!). It follows, naturally, that the FBI, IRS, and other invest
gative
arms of the
law, armed with a search warrant, can also be privy to these conversations! Talk about Big Brother!
Ted, KF4FLY, states he bought a company car which had OnStar installed. Not planni
ng on paying the $200+ per year for the service, he thought, "How can I use its' GPS for my benefi
t?". After some i
nternet research, he found a link for instructions on how to get an RS-232 interface cable hooked to the GPS. (http://members/cox.net/onstar/) . The link leads to other links (including APRS) to provi
de software for putting on your laptop to identify your position.
Ted states all this is reversi
ble should you decide you
wish to revert all back to OnStar!
More on BPL...
If you went to the link on first page, you probably learned that the company (PEC) does not have any plans for a large-scale commercial roll-out of BPL in the company's service territories. Thi
s
comes on the
heels of announced shutdown of BPL field trials in Pen Yan, NY and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. (The FCC strongly supports BPL)
If you have a need to send the club a package, etc, our post office box is 3276 (same as it has always been).
ARRL Affiliation
At the last meeting, a motion was made, seconded, and approved to seek reaffil
at
on with the ARRL. ARRL requires 51% of clubmembers to be ARRL Members, a condition in whch we quali
fy. Tom Land will send the paperwork to ARRL.
We are pleased to have Jerry Gragg, KF4PJL, and Floyd Key, KF4PJJ, rejoin us at last meeting with full member status. Both were members of the club before our "slumber party" of nearly four years ago. Thanks for coming back on board guys!!
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone for your efforts in helping to resurrect and revitalize the LARC! If each one calls one, we just might get a lot of our old members to rejoin the club!! (A November 1993 club roster revealed we had 32 paid-up members at the time. -Ed.) See you at the meeting...
Tom Land, KA4HKK.
