From the Newsletter history archives... Vintage Equipment From  the October '86 newsletter (entitled "Lenoir Amateur Radio Club" - after it was adopted as the official newsletter of the LARC but before it was renamed as the "News and Views"), it was  noted  that two new hams were added to the membership roster.  Benny Walker (then KB4UWR...now N4QBZ) and Max Cowick, KB4UVI (Father of Mike Cowick, N4FAX) became the latest members. In the same newsletter, Wayne Parlier, KB4TAF, upgraded to General while James Bradshaw upgraded to Extra.  (A new membership roster was included with the newsletter which sported no less than 32 active members! One is a SK and one is no longer licensed.  -Ed)
(Each month, a brief spotlight will appear here on equipment you may have seen at hamfest swap tables.  This month it is the Hallicrafters SX-42 Receiver ).
The Hallicrafters SX-42 (and later, the SX-43) had about one of the most professional, business-like appearance of all new receiver products at the time.  Not lacking in performance, the receiver, when paired to an equally smart looking and performing transmitter, made a ham station to be proud of!  While the two circular tuning dials left a little bit to be desired in today's digital tuning standards, it was  adequate for the less-crowded band conditions at the time.  Want one?? Expect to pay upwards of $200. for one in fine condition...if you can find one!

Spotlight on James Snell, WA4TNG

Spotlight on Michalene Snell, KE4HSD
Blind since birth (Orlando, FL,  1950), James attended the Florida School For The Blind in St. Augustine, FL (for all grades - 1st thru 12th), graduating in 1970.  After graduation, he worked for 2-3 years in the family-owned Hilltop Nursery (plants), obtaining a CB radio at that time. He ultimately moved to Powderhorn Mountain (Boone) in 1974 and later to Lenoir in 1993.  A great-uncle, K4BQX, interested him in ham radio...receiving his Tech license in March 1995 as KE4WNL.  James & Michalene Hall (KE4HSD) tied the wedding knot in April of this year!  James' interests include Echolink, all digital modes, and Public Service work, including SKYW ARN. Michalene ("Mikie" as she likes to be called) was born in 1954 at Valdese General Hospital in Rutherford College.  She attended Baton Elementary and graduated from Hudson High School.  She has been employed by Hibriten Chair, Bernhardt (Plant 10), and lastly by Broyhill Furniture (Harper Plant) until that plant closed recently.  Although she got interested in radio through use of a scanner monitoring public service agencies, she had a mentor (Jack, KE4TDH) who helped her study and get her Tech license, KE4HSD.  While she enjoys mostly ragchewing and public service (SKYWARN), she admits her passion(s) are her recent marriage to James Snell, WA4TNG, and  her recently restored 1972 Chevrolet Nova! Pg 3 Each month, 2 of our regular LARC members (alphabetical order) are profiled in this section.  Several members, and club-officer profiles, are in past issues.
