Vintage Equipment
From the October '86 newsletter (entitled "Lenoir Amateur Radio Club" - after it was adopted as the official newsletter of the LARC but before it was renamed as the "News and Views"), it was noted that Mike, N4FAX, presented a program on the National Traffic Service (NTS) in the previous month. Mike dispelled some of the heretofore unknown complexities of the NTS and its hierarchy. It was nice to know someone local was on top of it all. Traffic handling is a complete hobby unto itself within the realm of ham radio...and the NTS has proved its mettle in times of emergencies many times over in the past. ARRL Pamphlets on NTS were handed out.
(Each month, a brief spotlight will appear here on equipment you may have seen at hamfest swap tables. This month it is the
Drake SW-4A Receiver
).
A lot can be said for Drake equipment owing to the volume of units that were produced and more importantly, the volume of units that is still around! Of course, that bespeaks of their inherent design, their apparent eye-appeal, and of extreme importance...the overall quality of the product! Most of the equipment featured in this section has been ham equipment. But let's not overlook the shortwave receivers that were out there too. The Drake S W -4A could hold its own in a brawl owing to the fact of its Drake lineage. Find one for about $150 at a hamfest for a bargain!
