GPS (global positioning system) units are fast becoming a way of life.  Many auto manufacturers are now offering "OnStar" (see last month's editorial!) and the price of small handheld units are now competively priced in the $100-$150 range.  In addition, the Motorola cellphone, Model V-60X, has a built-in GPS (call 911 and you can be pinpointed to within 300 yards)...much better than the older "nearest tower" concept which could be up to 10 miles distant!

Pg 2 REMINDER:  NOVEMBER 8TH IS CLUB MEETING NIGHT AT THE EOC!  BRING A FRIEND The LARC Newsletter has been published each month (except during the club's "hibernation" period) since October 1986 (20 years minus 4) ! Repeater Committee : The Repeater status was discussed & several suggestions were offered ranging from trying a different frequency pair to switching to a 440 repeater for our operations.

Disaster Trailer Committee :  Suggested: the disaster trailer be made into a generator & antenna carrier and other supportive equipment.

EOC Kiosk Committee :  After the Oct 11th meeting, several went up on the roof of the EOC building to survey the present antenna situation...particularly to map out a plan on the installation of our proposd Delta Loop antenna.

We finally slipped away from the almost iron-fisted grip of the heat wave that we experiened during the August-October period and finally got relief by the onset of Fall.  But, unfortunately, we still have a serious problem remaining with the drought that has left our county parched due to lack of rain.  Even the nearby passing of Hurricane Noel off  the east coast failed to get close enough to give us some much needed rain.  As a result of our predicament, many cities and counties are in dire need of  rain to raise the reservoir levels. While many are on drilled or bored water wells, we can't get too smug...as water tables for these wells are also dangerously low and many could see wells drying up!  Couple all this with a much increased danger of forest fires in our area, we need to ensure that we have a couple of containers (5-gallon) of potable water on hand and to make sure that our emergency  "go-kit" (you DO have one, don't you?) is ready to go at a moment's notice.  A well-stocked go-kit should provide for you and your family's needs for 3-days.
