From the Newsletter history archives... Vintage Equipment From  the November '86 Newsletter (entitled "Lenoir Amateur Radio Club" - after it was adopted as the official newsletter of the LARC but before it was renamed as the "News and Views"), it was  noted  that a massive manhunt for a little boy named Adam was conducted by the Western Piedmont Amateur Radio Club and various county agencies.  The little boy was  found safe and sound and much  news media attention was given on TV to the county rescue teams, dog handlers, ambulance drivers, etc.  But there was not one mention of the WPARC's tireless efforts in manning the radio center & mobiles involved in the search.  Not much has changed, eh?  -Ed
(Each month, a brief spotlight will appear here on equipment you may have seen at hamfest swap tables.  This month it is the Hallicrafters SX-122 Receiver ).
It had to happen sooner or later.  For years, Hallicrafters had relied upon its staid design to package a proven receiver (this SX-122 is really not much more than a re-packaged SX-100). They took a chance and completely redesigned the enclosure and came up with a very pleasing and functional package in a pleasing color...a design that in later years was incorporated into other receivers (as well as matching transmitters, etc.).  Have about $150.00 on your hip if you expect to take an SX-122 in good condition home from a hamfest.

Spotlight on Elaine Bruner
Gary, a lifelong resident of Lenoir, was born November 28, 1953.  He attended the local schools of West Lenoir, Davenport, Lenoir Jr. High, and Lenoir H.S.  From there, however, the plot thickened as he attended the NJ Institute of Technology (Newark) receiving a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering and later attended ASU and Virginia Tech where he began Graduate work in Computer Science & Chemistry.  In 1983, He began employment with Western Piedmont Community College as a Coordinator of Computer Engineering Technology.  Bobby Moretz, KI4EC, a friend and also a Lenoir native, displayed & demo'ed his station to Gary...and he was hooked!  He bought an SWL receiver & started listening...later attending a ham class at WPCC.  The rest is history!  Gary presently holds an Extra class license; is an ARRL Life Member; is currently the ARES Emergency Coordinator  for Caldwell County; and is a WCARS/FCC Volunteer Examiner.  His current interests include contesting, emergency services, and building electronic accessories. Gary, Webmaster and host of this website, maintains the server that provides this Newsletter and other projects.
Elaine joined us in 2005...and has since been an ardent supporter of all club activities.  Studying for her Tech license...she will soon sit for the exam.  Born in 1948 in Johnson City, TN (Washington County), she attended school at St. Mary's and later graduated from Oak Ridge High in Oak Ridge, TN.  She took a few courses (Liberal Arts) at the University of Tennessee in the 70's, but was interrupted by beginning employment with the City School System. After moving to Lenoir, Elaine began attending Caldwell Community College, taking Liberal Arts classes (Creative Writing is one of her favorites).  She became interested in Ham Radio after her Son, David, KI4KWT, became licensed and brought home a 2m handie-talkie; she was captivated by listening to Emergency Services and Ham Radio on VHF.  She is a Team member of CERT, having attended all classes of that recent county-sponsored program along with 14 others.  Welcome to Amateur Radio and the Lenoir ARC  Elaine! Pg 3 Each month, 2 of our regular LARC members (alphabetical order) are profiled in this section.  Several members, and club-officer profiles, are in past issues.
