The Caldwell Amateur Radio Emergency Services (CARES) Net is called every Sunday night at 8:30 PM on the 147.33 (Hibriten) repeater. This is a formal directed net and is sponsored by the ARES. Its purpose is to train, and keep in readiness, a pool of qualified emergency radio operators in the event of a local and/or regional emergency.  Net checkins will be called by alpha groups and, unless you check in & out, you will be called again during the informal portion to offer any comments, etc.  The 147.33 repeater has a CTCSS tone of 141.3 mhz.     ??   Did you know...  ?? Wood has an immortality all its own.  Log palisades that protected the prehistoric lake-dwellers in northern Italy have been found intact, as have pilings buried under Venice for 1,000 years.  White cedar trees buried in the swamps of Virginia for an estimated 3,000 years have been dug up and sawed into boards that may last another 1,000 years.

Next Have a young teenager in your household that you would like to "infect" with the ham radio bug?  If so, the ARRL publishes several Ham Radio mystery type adventure novels that are aimed at the young reader. They are an excellent method to discreetly expose your child to our great hobby!  Look for titles such as SOS At Midnight, CQ Ghost Ship, DX Brings Danger, and Death Valley QTH (all by Walker A. Tompkins -paperback - $5 ea) While our numbers were down of those attending the annual Christmas Eatin' Meetin' at Captain's Galley Restaurant when compared to last year, those that did attend had a good time,  good food, and good fellowship.  Those not attending also missed a brief, but lively, spirited discussion of many items of interest concerning the club and topics for 2007.
