The Caldwell Amateur Radio Emergency Services (CARES) Net is called every Sunday night at 8:30 PM on the 147.33 (Hibriten) repeater. This is a formal directed net and is sponsored by the ARES. Its purpose is to train, and keep in readiness, a pool of qualified emergency radio operators in the event of a local and/or regional emergency. Net checkins will be called by alpha groups and, unless you check in & out, you will be called again during the informal portion to offer any comments, etc. The 147.33 repeater has a CTCSS tone of 141.3 mhz.
?? Did you know... ??
Because the chalky shells of certain marine animals have a composition that depends upon the temperature of the water in which they were formed, a "time thermometer" can fathom when a fossil lived, what the water temperature was, how long the fossil lived, and in what season it died--even though it was tens of millions of years ago.

During the recent storm watch and, later, a storm warning, it was interesting to note that as each storm "cell" came through, they either just skimmed by to the north or just skimmed by to the south...with only a trace amount of snow or the dreaded sleet/ice formations actually landing.

Last month, several book titles by Walker A. Tompkins were mentioned to aid you in getting the young person in your family interested in Ham Radio. ARRL also publishes additional titles by Cynthia Wall with such titles as: Night Signals, Hostage in the Woods, Disappearing Act, and more. Ms. Wall's fiction novels are slightly more bent to the YL persausion. Altogether, there are about 8 titles by each author and all titles are priced at $5.00.

Not too long ago, the ARRL presented a program entitled "Amateur Radio Today", narrated by Walter Cronkite, which is a short but excellent program/tool designed to enlighten the general public (and those hams not into ARES) about the public service work performed by hams. The program, a PSA (Public Service Announcement), can be viewed and heard by going to:
