The Caldwell Amateur Radio Emergency Services (CARES) Net is called every Sunday night at 8:30 PM on the 147.33 (Hibriten) repeater. This is a formal directed net and is sponsored by the ARES. Its purpose is to train, and keep in readiness, a pool of qualified emergency radio operators in the event of a local and/or regional emergency.  Net checkins will be called by alpha groups and, unless you check in & out, you will be called again during the informal portion to offer any comments, etc.  The 147.33 repeater has a CTCSS tone of 141.3 mhz.       ??   Did you know...  ?? About 3.9 million square miles of the earth's land surface (about 10 percent of the whole) is under a permanent ice cover.  Eighty percent of all the world's ice is in Antarctica; 12 percent more is in Greenland.  The remaining 8 percent is distributed among various polar islands and mountain peaks.

NEW TECHNO-THRILLER                    MEETING AT EOC!
The August club meeting, on the 9th, will be held at the EOC...as the special meeting to be held at the Hudson FD has, once again, been postponed due to last-minute remodeling/renovations.

Next  NEW CALL - EOC A new techno-thriller book is now on the market.  Heavily slanted toward Ham Radio, the book " A Matter of Destiny " by Nancy L. Williams, NR4RR,  is an adult spy novel involving government cover-ups, mystery, intrigue, and the age-old question of "are we alone in our galaxy?".  The book fills, quite nicely, the void left in the current ham radio fiction books authored by the likes of Cynthia Wall & Walker Tomkins...whose stories are written, primarily, with the teenager in mind.  I was fortunate enough to catch up with the author at the WCARS hamfest where she and her hubby were on hand for a book-signing session.  Both Nancy, and husband Tab, were delightful to meet and to speak with.  Book price:  $15.00.
Field Day photos by Tom, KA4HKK, can be viewed by clicking here A brand-new call has been issued to the Caldwell County ARES station located at the EOC of the Department of Emergency Management.  The call KI4YHG , a station-only license, was granted by the FCC on 7/23/07 but is only the first step in securing a more identifiable call for the station through the vanity call sign program. An application for this vanity call sign is now pending FCC action.  More details...LARC club meet meeting.
